Mr. William Mengel
President & General Manager

With more than 40 years in the electronics industry, William Mengel provides an uncommon combination of technical, management and global marketing experience to the Onyx organization. During much of his career, Bill managed high-profile projects for RCA and Thomson, where he held managerial positions in operations, marketing and engineering. Among his projects having an industry-wide impact in the 1990s was the subscriber terminal system used with North America's first high-powered Digital Satellite System; Bill was one of the architects in this, the world's first major deployment of a mass-produced consumer product to utilize MPEG digital compression as a platform. As a member of Thomson’s Research and Innovation Organization, Bill’s focus was to identify, manage and promote the most promising innovative projects and to bring them to business and technical maturity. In October of 2002, he accepted a technical Emmy award on behalf of Thomson from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS). The Emmy was awarded in recognition of Thomson’s pioneering efforts in the development of the consumer digital set-top boxes for satellite and cable with which Bill was intimately involved. Bill is the recipient of more than six U.S. patents, the first having been granted in 1979. After retiring from Thomson in 2003, he formed a technology consultancy, serving on or advising technical committees and speaking at functions sponsored by industry groups, such as the National Association of Broadcasters, the Satellite Broadcasting and Communications Association and the Consumer Electronics Association. Bill joined Onyx as president and general manager in 2009.
